緣起 Inspiration

In the summer of 2020, the two of us, high school students from Washington International  School in Taichung, went to Houli to participate in a volunteer event in the local Hydrovege Co.. This team mainly supports local children who could not study well in elementary school due to family factors. These children are single-parent families or facing domestic violence, parented across generations, or their parents are unable to accompany them. Although they are not born into a perfect family, we always see smiles on their faces.

In the event, we learned about their family backgrounds and their thoughts, realizing that there are more disadvantaged school children in Taiwan who need help.   This year (2022) due to the epidemic, various volunteer activities have been halted, so during the summer vacation of 2021, we started planning, and sorted the project out step by step.

Our non-profit project cooperates with many remote schools throughout Taiwan. During the summer of 2021, through the suggestion of Principal Liao of Yuemei Elementary School, we first found four schools as our first phase of the program: Dongxing Elementary School in New Community of Taichung City , Yuemei Elementary School in Houli District, Ma Ming Elementary School in Waipu District and  Xinxing elementary school in Tanzi District.

Before the start of school, we made presentations to principals of each school and put forward our plans and ideas. In addition to supporting our plans, the principals also provided us with valuable suggestions and new ideas. In the future, we hope that this funding project can continue to expand to more primary schools.

For our plan, we learned a lot about coffee and coffee roasting. We try to find out the best timing for green coffee beans from the chemical reactions of caramelization to the first crack in the process, hoping that our roasted coffee can bring you the best flavor and feeling.

You can use the QR Code on the back of the drip bags to track your donation history when you purchase our coffee. We hope to make the Coffee Kids program more open and transparent through the donation recording.

Our green beans are from Nordic Approach, a world-renowned green beans company from Scandinavia. In addition to the high quality of this company, the most important thing is that they will use relatively high prices to purchase beans from African and Central and South American farmers. The purchase prices are even open and transparent, which can not only increase farmers' income but also obtain the highest quality coffee beans.

Our roasting uses the most famous Probat UG22 roaster in Germany. The machine is quite stable and easy to operate. Because of the stability of the machine, we only need to grasp the timing of roasting the beans. We used to think that operating machines was difficult for high school students, but the experience made us feel that operating these roasters seemed easier than studying for school.

Because the packaging of the ear bag is related to food safety, we entrusted the task to a professional food-certified factory for packaging. The factory uses Japanese FUSO professional packaging machine, 18 degree C packaging environment, and high-purity 99.99% nitrogen-producing mechanisms.

We hope this plan will be a win-win for all. In addition to using the funds to improve the learning environment of disadvantaged students, schools can also subsidize the needs of disadvantaged students. The public can drink high quality speciality coffee and contribute for disadvantaged school children. For us, Coffee Kids, we can gain life experience from this program understand the conditions of disadvantaged school children. We can learn more about how to execute a project and market our products.
